Ensuring patient voice in health and social care services

Imelda Redmond CBEBen PageFatima Khan-Shah
The pandemic has had a profound impact on health and social care. Many of the changes brought in happened overnight and in some areas the way care is delivered has shifted permanently.

Yet the need for speed often left little room for involving people in the design of these new ways of doing things. The reality of waiting lists and overall pressures on services has also affected what people can expect from services for the foreseeable future.

What will you gain from attending? Join this session to hear how this has affected the relationship between users and those running services, and why it continues to be so vital for Healthwatch and others to champion the views of people.

Who is this session for? All attendees

Chaired by: Imelda Redmond CBE, National Director of Healthwatch England
Speaker: Ben Page, Chief Executive, Ipsos More
Panellists: Fatima Khan-Shah, Programme Director, Unpaid Carers and Personalised Care, West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership, and Jeremy Harris, Bethany’s father and patient advocate

How Healthwatch can help keep service users at the heart of their care

To be an organisation that advocates for the public, patients and service users we need to act on the values that we have collectively agreed on. This is key to ensuring that patient voices are heard.

In this session we take an in depth look into what the Healthwatch values mean to each of us. We’ll also reflect and discuss how everyone across the network can embed our core values in our work. These are listening, including, analysing, acting and partnering.

What will you gain from attending? Delegates will have a better understanding of how we can all make a difference, by incorporating our values into our respective roles, to help make sure that we’re working collectively together to keep patients at the heart of their care

Grasping the intangible

Often, we are told our insight has been valuable to health and care services or we feel we’ve made a different to a particular group of people, but it can be hard to describe the impact we’ve actually had. Identifying and communicating outcomes from clearly defined projects or following report recommendations is one thing. But in these situations, it can be far harder.

What will you gain from attending? This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss how we might better convey what we achieve when we provide deeper insight from service users ; make slow-burning contributions to areas of work over longer periods of time; and when we influence stakeholders’ organisational cultures to better embed service user voice.
You’ll need to bring your experience and thoughts to this workshop discussion and be ready to contribute as we don’t have all the answers! But together we can move closer to being able to really communicate to our funders and the public what Healthwatch achieves.

Who is this session for? Lead officers and senior staff.

Speakers: Jon Turner, Impact Programme and Regional Network (North West) Manager, Healthwatch England with Lucy Davies, Chief Officer, Healthwatch Sheffield and Kate Scribbins, Chief Executive, Healthwatch Surrey
